Uttegirazu
Solemn and quiet and enrapturing would be appropriate terms to use in an attempt to describe an album which feels like a set of musical pieces that were unearthed from the soil with soul searching toil. While Mr. Von Till's main cacaphonous vehicle, Neurosis, razes the listener from earth with metal wire, his solo work slowly buries the listener six feet under. Yet the two are undoubtedly connected, this album revealing the mournful and minimal sounds inherent to the core of most latter era Neurosis records. The music is sparse, mainly using organ, fiddle, acoustic guitar, and banjo, slowling overlaying each other while Von Till's crooning lulls the listener with a sad tale of forgotten times. This is most evident on the title track, and "my work is done," in which organ and banjo accompany a telling of a blacksmith who lays down his hammer and accepts that his forge work is over. It feels very, very ancient, revealing Von Till as a deep thinker and an old soul. As an homage, the last track is a recording of Von Till's grandfather reciting an Alfred Lord Tennyson poem, while minimal effects sway in the background. A thinker, this album work amazingly well on a dark night with only the hearth and a candle as company.
