Overlooked in its time, I remember, I was there, bought this 10" in Oxford when I was 17. He and his band (Eyeless in Gaza) were ridiculed and derided by the music press. I think time tells a different tale. This is a work of quiet and understated genius. Comparisons with Nico are easy but Martyn is visceral and present as opposed to Nico's cold trauma. I hadn't listened to this for over 25 years until quite recently and surprisingly I was proud of my younger taste. This album is great, really and I don't mean great in the current sense. It's GREAT.
