In 1984 Yehuda Poliker had already established himself as the front man of the rock band Benzeen and had a platinum album to his credit. His solo debut was a radical departure from what he had done before. Poliker's parents were Greek Jews who had been deported to Auschwitz, survived, and settled in Israel. He tapped into his Greek-Jewish heritage, choosing traditional Greek songs, having them translated to Hebrew, and then having lyricist and producer Yakov Gilad adapt the results into new Hebrew lyrics for all but one of the songs. (Mediterranean Sunset is an instrumental.)The results were breathtaking. Poliker sings lead and plays both guitar (electric and acoustic) and traditional instruments (bouzouki and baglama). While some songs are nearly traditional, others have significant rock and/or electronic elements added, producing a unique sound. The album went platinum in Israel, exceeding the sales of both Benzeen albums put together and Poliker's solo career was launched. This album also earned Poliker a significant following in Greece and was released in other European countries as well. While it certainly helps if you understand the Hebrew lyrics the music and performances on this album are so good that anyone can enjoy it. Highly recommended.
