Flash_back
Of course everyone expected this collection, it’s just that no one was sure how it was going to be presented or what it might contain … though I wish I could tell you that it’s not just another box set.First, what you’re getting here, whether you decide on vinyl (six vinyl albums) or compact disc (four discs, or the abridged two disc version), is a 60 song retrospect titled An American Treasure, a loosely defined collection of numbers compiled by guitarist Mike Campbell, keyboard player Benmount Tench, engineer Ryan Ulate, who no doubt knows and understands Petty’s material and concepts better than anyone, along with Tom’s wife and daughter. On the physical side is a fifty-two page booklet made up of previously unpublished photos and some rare images that I’ve seen before Add to that liner notes by Bud Scoppa, who morphed together interviews with Tom and the aforementioned players. The collection is a mixture of album tracks, B Sides, alternative takes, and of course live material. In addition, all of the songs have been remastered, which is leading me to think that there is an actual comprehensive box set on the horizon of all his material in album format, which is what I’m waiting on, as several of his albums have never made it vinyl. The collection also includes bits and pieces from Petty’s solo career, though not that many, and that’s a sincere shame. If you have any of the massive collections already on the market, there’s no real need for this, as it’s just the first in a no doubt long series that will be surfacing over the next few years. As I mentioned, as considered as this outing may be, it’s just another in a series of compilations with bonus material, this listener is waiting on that formal boxset, where all of the Heartbreakers’ material, along with Petty’s solo albums will find their way to being remastered, polished to a new sounding brightness and delivered unto his fans on glorious heavy wax. Case in point, remember how people were crushing each other with mounting prices for Donald Fagen’s (of Steely Dan) original vinyl albums, only to have those outings released as a boxed set, deliciously remastered and more affordable as a package than the original first pressings? So hold on tight, I promise that there is a comprehensive edition waiting in the wings, as this is what Tom's true fans wish.Had this collection not found it’s way to my door, I doubt I would have purchased it, as The Live Anthology already exists, along with the Playback box and The Complete Studio Albums Volume 1 and 2, not to mention the 10 CD set The Complete Works 1976 - 1991 ... though in all fairness, it has been well considered and sounds righteously beautiful, making me sad the the world managed to get bit smaller with the loss of Tom Petty. The album artwork was created by Shepard Fairey, with rumors circulating that there will be a signed limited edition print of this image in the near future.Review by Jenell Kesler

I can’t think of any album that hasn’t been released on vinyl. I have every one on vinyl. The only thing I can think of is the Playback box. I would love to have that on vinyl.
