Sue Barker was a “jazz singer” from Adelaide who seems to have disappeared into obscurity now. This was her only release, and from the quality of it, God only knows why she isn’t still doing her thing. There’s a great range of vocal styles on display in this recording, from covers of Duke Ellington and Billie Holiday, right through to a great version of ‘What’s Going On’ and ‘I Heard It Through the Grapevine’, both by Marvin Gaye. But the killer track on here is her fantastic version of Curtis Mayfield’s ‘Love To The People’ which is, as they say on the Dusty Groove website, “worth the price of the album.” Finding this record isn’t easy, but it’ll be worth it when you do (aussiefunk.blogspot.com).
