The Ninth was completed in the autumn of 1823 and was forest performed in Vienna at Beethoven's last public orchestral concert, on May 7, 1824. Either after the scherzo or at the end of the symphony (reports differ), there was great applause; the ear Beethoven, however, could not hear it, and one of the signers gently turned him around to see the enthusiastic response. The Ninth Symphony had become part of history.
