Following the release of Mahakali, Jarboe developed the Kali theme in various styles through a series of related albums. Ritual reigns supreme on Daksinakali. Carried by mostly galloping rhythms, the songs, poems and mantras are flavored by ambient textures of great depth. The album opens with a chanted and spoken invocation over an uptempo jungle drum loop. Then follows a celebration of the deity on the equally fast-paced second track with its arresting percussion. A mournful prayer rides the undulating rhythms of the highly atmospheric third track, while the fourth has an orchestral feel and an intricate sequence of sung and chanted parts. Spectral voices and effects create an other-worldly ambience on track five, while a flute, wordless vocals and a mantra chant weave magic on track six. Daksinakali concludes with a short vocal reprise of the second track.
