This recording has been around long enough for its music to almost sound quaint (remember when Chris Thile wasn't all so self-aware and serious?). But now that this recording is available on vinyl, the music really outshines its mp3 or CD counterpart. The only issue I have with the vinyl is how they've packaged it:The recording was made for the CD, so the length of the album runs around 50 minutes. This makes it too long for the standard length 12in 33 1/3 RPM LP. So they packed it as 3 songs per side, 12 inch LP at 33 1/3 RPM on 2LPs. This means that every 8 minutes you're getting up to change the record -- and that the center of the record is basically unused.I understand that you couldn't do 2 LPs with one being a 12 inch fully used and the other being hardly used at all, so the effort was to balance out the records. But I think and easier answer would have been this: You could have had the same 2 LPs, but changed the speed to 45RPM and had (theoretically) better sound and used all the vinyl space of both LPs. This wouldn't solve the time issue (same number of songs per side) but it would at least use up all that vinyl real estate. There is so much space left on these records that I almost feel like I'm listening to a series of singles or 7 inch records. The mastering is great. The records sound fantastic. I just wish they had though through the packing a little more before rushing them out the door.
