Wow, so much better than the crap reissue I just sold back. With this album all I want is vinyl silence and for the few parts Bruce does to sound amazing. And this pressing delivers better than any I've heard. Can't comment on the remaster vs. the original in terms of dynamics of remaster, yadda yadda. That said, this version sounds full and clear and in your face on a good system. AND this has been darn quiet, no surface noise for the most part, during the quiet passages so far and that's what I want. My previous reissue, which I sold back, ruined the mood with tons of crackle. Highway Patrolman sounds divine despite a few bits of noise.Tiny NotesA few clicks and crackles on Mansion on the Hill. Highway Patrolman sound amazing, a few bits of noise, but this song, so heartbreaking and amazing in sound, delivers on this pressing. Best pressing of this album available. I've tried original pressings from US and Europe and they all had too much surface noise, which on this quiet record is intolerable. I'm sure there's quiet older pressings out there, but I never found one. Take the easy route. This record is quiet and sounds as great as any original!

At least one film has been based on a song from this album (Sean Penn's "The Indian Runner" based on "Highway Patrolman") and i believe that Alexander Payne's film "Nebraska" is partially inspired by the song "Used Cars." One can easily imagine screenplays based on "Atlantic City" and "Johnny 99" as well. How many other records can make this claim? The characters here are all flotsam on the shoulders and off ramps of any number of cold and unfeeling American interstates; some who have lost all purpose in life, some on the run, some hopeful, all of them desperate in Reagan america circa 1982. Springsteen closes the LP's most upbeat song "Open All Night" with the great line, "Hey Mr. DJ, won't you hear my last prayer, hey-ho rock 'n' roll deliver me from nowhere." It's this line that ties the entire record together (and perhaps even Springsteen's entire life) as its so much truer for these characters (and vicariously, ourselves) to believe in the delivering power of song than in most anything else the country had to offer at this time. He closes the album with the hopeful misdirection of "Reason To Believe." Nobody has found that particular "reason" yet, they just hope to find it. Maybe they will and maybe they won't and that's as much optimism this devastating record has to offer.

Anyone else have surface noise issues with this record? It seems to me that no matter how mint the copy is, it always ends up with a lot of surface noise. I hear the recent 2015 reissue is pretty quiet though.

Not normally a Springsteen fan, but this LP is irresistible in its stark, stripped down arrangements and dark, poignant songs. I have a portastudio of the type he used to record this, and I'm amazed he got as much sound as he did out of it. Great album.

Absolutely brilliant young Springsteen - one of those LP's that you get home and play more than twice! Would be interesting to hear a progression of Springsteen songs as his voice ages over time, a bit like a Tom Waits introspective.

This release is logged as "Netherlands" but should it perhaps be Europe? My copy matches the front & back scans but the disc is made in Austria, as is the disc for the later Columbia "Europe" version under the same catalogue number. (Many other CBS/Columbia CDs of the period seem to have been printed in one country, manufactured in another and distributed widely across Europe.)
