Ask any rocker ... they’ve all got their quintessential favorites, but chances are, when they rattle off their short list, which no doubt includes some Zeppelin, Cream, and Rolling Stones, more than not, they’re gonna overlook Joe Walsh, and his floor splintering rendition of “Rocky Mountain Way,” a song that truly caused Joe and most of the rest of us to instantly lose our minds back in 1973.It didn’t matter who you were, straight, stoner, soldier, top of the class, pharmacy delivery guy, or gas station attendant ... when “Rocky Mountain Way” came on the radio the world stopped spinning ... volume knobs were cranked, air-guitars were lifted from imagined cases, and we were jettisoned up to where the air was rare, where the guitars were the real stars, with power slide runs swooping low, hanging in the ether for but an all too brief moment, while we waited on those voice-box effects to wobble our knees, and send half the listeners to their glove boxes, hoping to perhaps find half a joint of Acapulco Gold and fire it up before the song ended.“Rocky Mountain Way" changed my life, with that song in the background I could slice and dice with precision, with that song in the background I was the coolest chick walking the planet, with that song in the background I was Number 1 G.I., invincible, able to tap-dance through a minefield, or climb the chain-link fence and go skinny dipping at 2 in the morning. To say “Rocky Mountain Way” inspired bad behavior is an understatement, “Rocky Mountain Way” was the soundtrack for bad behavior ... and who cared, ‘cause while the cop was writing you a speeding ticket, Joe Walsh was ruining your speakers. To this day, “Rocky Mountain Way” still slaps a mile wide smile on me that makes my face ache ... so when someone asks you to rattle off that rapturous guitar laced short list, put Mr. Walsh and “Rocky Mountain Way” at the very top.
