Paul Woolford has made a name for himself in techno, in house, and now, as Special Request, in jungle. SOUL MUSIC is a double disc filled with energy. And even if the electro beats that kick off the melodic "Forbidden" don't sound like much initially, but the old skool throwback of "Undead" and the dark strains of the breaks on "Cold Blooded" start to bring up the energy. The cool vibe of "Lockjaw" contrasts with the rave throwback of "Ride VIP" and "Soundboy Killer." An atmospheric darkness pervades "Black Ops," while the static and piano plinking that kick off "Descent" morphs into a frenzy of keys. The second disc provides a combination of original tracks and remixes, starting with a straight-up breaks mix of Tessela's "Hackney Parrot," while Lana Del Ray's vocals on "Ride" become fodder for a jungle safari, replete with a funk bass halfway through. Elsewhere, the jittery synths on "Mindwash" are like listening to a robot having a nervous breakdown until it finally reaches acceptance, and Anthony Naples gives that track a percussive wash. But Woolford also gets to show off his stylistic versatility: house heads will find a tribal workout with "Lolita (Warehouse Mix)," while "Vapour" hints towards dub techno. Meanwhile Kassem Mosse and Mix Mup give a clattery mix to "Deflowered," contrasting Hieroglyphic Being's more spacey, psychedelic version. Anthony Shakir offers "Mindwash" a Detroitan rub, and Lee Gamble brings a mellow, dubby sensibility to "Capsules." Soul music indeed!
