The arrival of the Beatles diminished the appeal of 'old' rock and rollers like Rick Nelson. 'Fire Breathing Dragon' is a fine pop song, with some tasty James Burton guitar licks thrown in. 'Your Kind of Lovin' was somebody elses hit, I believe, but Rick does a fine job with it. Very pleasant pop music, co-written by Annette Tucker, who would co-write with Nancy Mantz the truly underrated psych classic 'I Had Too Much to Dream Last Night', by one of the coolest of the 'one hit wonders', the Electric Prunes. But the public was not much interested in Rick Nelson anymore. The Fab Four truly wreaked havoc on what had for years been 'pop' music. Elvis movies weren't cool anymore, they were damn goofy. Some fine pop music, but any sort of 'dangerous' rock and roll had been pretty much quashed. By 1960, Elvis had been somehow castrated. The only real rocker of the early sixties' is the Pelvis's 'Little Sister' (which is truly classic Elvis). The Beatles made everything that came before them seem cornball. It may have been the pleasantest of 'dangerous', but with the arrival of the Beatles, pop music suddenly became important again. AND they could rock and roll. The notion that the JFK assassination had anything to do with America's adoration of the Beatles is a liberal's wet dream. The truth is, the Beatles brought back rock and roll. The explosion of sound that is 'She Loves You' is still compelling today.Yes it is. The Beatles were THAT damn good.
