This is Summoner's "debut" record since changing their name from Riff Canon, and it is in every sense of the word, new territory. While Riff Canon was certainly adept at their craft, the "new" Summoner takes stoner metal to new heights by marrying sludge, doom, and psychedelia with harmonious resolve. Many bands attempt this, the same way many listeners use "sludge" and "doom" descriptions interchangeably, but Phoenix makes very clear the difference of these genres by displaying each of them singularly at various points in the record. The fast-paced riffs combined with haunting and bellowing sludgy lines make this a killer illustration of how doom and sludge should sound. Beyond the music, Magnetic Eye Records, working side by side with Pirates Press, continue their impressive track record of producing stunningly beautiful wax variants. This third press variant (half cream / half red) is off the hook, and would make even the most discerning collector look twice at the production. Killer artwork makes this release, both musically and its packaging, a record worth picking up.
