A reissue of a Cherry Red box called 'Punk - Voice Of A Generation' which was a collection of a series of individually released discs. It's a very strange combination of studio and live tracks of completely varying fidelity. Though a few of the discs are specifically themed (the most bizarre being the disc of novelty cuts about public personalities, how did that one do as an individual release I wonder) the set feels slapped together with seemingly no rhyme or reason, even by budget punk compilation standards. Additionally frustratingly, there's absolutely no liner notes to say where any of the tracks came from. If they're singles, radio sessions, bootlegs, album cuts, you have to know already or make a guess at their providence. One would assume the Cherry Red version contained more (as in any) information about the individual tracks. Definitely not remastered (or mastered) in any way and even the more high-fidelity studio cuts sound like rather dodgy vinyl rips in many cases. It's very possible some of these recordings only exist as 7" singles now, masters lost to time, but without liner notes it's only speculation. Where the box succeeds is collecting a fair number of tracks from lesser 2nd and 3rd generation bands you might not have on other punk comps which tend to focus the big names of the 1st generation. Bonus points for NOT including anything by The Damned, Buzzcocks or Sex Pistols (despite the conscious tie-in with the title and graphics). All-in-all, it's an odd combination of meticulously archiving a certain period of UK punk and haphazardly tossing anything they could get their hands on into a blender to turn a quick buck. McLaren would approve. Picking up "God Save This Box" (10 discs/160 tracks) for $10-$15 is probably worth your while to fill some holes, but paying any more than that is a bit of a rock'n'roll swindle—you get what you pay for, so make sure you don't pay too much.
