If you're familiar with LOOK DE BOUK, I'm sure you can cut from my poor attempt at analysing the thing & simply buy it. There, that's probably got rid of the people who would snear at my words. I guess they fall into the category of Jazz with heavy leanings towards Traditional, Folk, Ethnic, Medieval and quirky Children's Hour-type musics. It's all well played, but as mentioned, damn eccentric! I'm not sure of the medium (I was sent an advance copy on cassette), so watch WATCH for more details. Side one opens with the short "Bises Cornues", an ancient fanfare of dusty instruments. "Gratter Pour Casser La Croute" is a sort of Sixties Euroviston song over fairground music. It transforms into a slower, darker piece of vocal work over organ and damp ambience. "Inte Quanta" is an acapella thing with tambourine. The 'lead instrument' is the kazoo! "St Vitas Dance" is a bubbling popping rhythm over which various vocal noises layer on top of simplistic organ and 'attractive' fresh female vocals. "Le Doux Gars Roux" is not unlike some early POPUL VUH with ethnic chanting and 'natural' sounds. "Perle Des Varinettes" is a strange almost REICH-like thing based on voice-created sounds & echoes. It stops and changes several times giving the impression of starting another track. "Cacatonie Ponctuee De Harangue" has organ, clicky percussive sounds and that bright but seductive voice. "La Couverture Du Rat" opens with what sounds like bird sound & burnt electronic synth sounds, strained and twisting. This gives way to allow an ethnic-sounding piece access, a fast piece of Folk music from God-knows what dark corner of the globe. It has a nursery simplicity to it which is rather nice. "Sur Un Air De Galbon Varan" is a thin slither of sound (just six seconds long) a very French sounding acoustic/vocal piece. "Le Retour Du Fils De C'Ui D'en Haut" opens with what might be elephants trumpeting pathetically, followed by a plucking rhythm (presumably synth). It's not unlike an amusing Infant Television Programme soundtrack over a drum beat like horses cantering in strict tempo. "Igloo, Igloo" follows this, sounding a little like THE RESIDENTS circa "Eskimo" singing the previous track. "Massacre En Latine" sounds nowhere as aggressive as the title suggests, an upbeat piece of dancey stuff. "Une Trompe Dans L'Oeil De Ton Voisin" is a deep, moody piece, slow and graceful. "Surf Sur Duvet D'Oie" is an odd piece with lots of vocal oddities in it's strange 'rhythm'. "A Ton Tour D'En Bayer Parajillo" is again an Eastern Ethnic sounding piece, clipping rhythm on percussive instruments while the vocalist sings across the top. "Carottes Et Gruyere" is a fairly minimal thing, harmonica, the female vocalist and a distant shuffling rhythm. It bursts into a fully-filled-out rhythm with crazy high-speed solos over the top - really quite amusing! "Point De Vue" is a dense thing, thick and claustrophobic with a wall of male voice. The second side of the tape, although I doubt of the actual recording, opens with "Le P'Tit Patissier" is another smal1, quirky piece, held together by the agile female voice. "Grasse Bailleuse (Dedicated To Truffe, But....)" is another piece with popping sounds & strange rhythm. It changes direction and becomes a darker, slower thing. "As A Bug In A Rug" is supposed to be next, but the odd track with nasty bass and far reaching horns is far too long. "Les Vrais Mechants Ne Meurent Jamais" must be next having a Poppy softness with Medieval leanings, and something similar to TEST DEPT circa "Pax Brittanica" although softer. "Les Pingouines, Reines Des Baleines" is another quirky piece which changes direction several times. It reminds me a little of LUDUS, although far more complex. "There Is Nothing Left For Me But To Die" builds up on a storm of white noise, a simplistic little piece of music, the minimal instruments carried by the strong voice, It goes off at a tangent with a clockwork rhythm holding it up. "La Castratrice Chauve" closes the album on a more upbeat note, oddly eccentric as it sounds. Some of the album's track list Is a Little hard to follow, so I may have made mistakes. The music itself grows on you after a few listens — these are stramge but harmless people, and the world is so much richer for having their like. Originally reviewed for Soft Watch.
