Fordrekelv
Some rough musicianship and strained vocalism is saved by a lot of lovely melodies and excellent, if metrically square, lyrics. Hints of what's to come from them strongest on the very strong "Westfall" and "Okkervil River Song." "Dead Dog Song" is simultaneously awfully touching, terribly honest, and a whole lot of fucking fun. "Happy Hearts" would be a pretty great song if it weren't for the obnoxious vocal. Quite a few meh songs, but no bad ones, and a dusting of very good ones. In retrospect, an auspicious introduction to what has become a really impressive discography.
