Road.to sliver
Having found this entirely by chance on an open-air street market for 0.5 Eur, at first I thought it was a joke or yet another of those promotional CDs and magazine bundles made in the late 90s and late 00s, where old dance tracks often found their way to sadly be forgotten.. :-(But wait. It appears to be a legitimate retail FM Records release, the catalogue number is not like the ones FM Records uses for promos, nor is the word "promo" or anything like that ever mentioned. It has a complete booklet with track details, and, why, even the tracklist is much, much better than what you'd find on a bundle! And yet, there's that ugly yellow cover with this logo that looks like a washing powder brand....wait what... CONTINENT HYPERMARKETS? Well, now I'm "sold", I had to see what gives and so made the 0.5 Eur "sacrifice" to get it and here it is...There's no doubt it's a legitimate FM Records release: FM Records often made some "side releases" along with the more famous Hit Box and Groovy Sound series, like e.g. Hot Hits, Top Hits '96 etc. and even some RETAIL non-promo releases with very blatant product endorsement (e.g. Groovy Sound 2, Groovy Sound 4). OK, those two compilations actually had some cool licensed artwork as a selling point (after all, you gave your money to buy an advertisement!!!) but this affiliation with the (former) Continent hypermarkets chain with this butt-ugly logo borders on kitsch...it would be interesting to know if that compilation was only sold at Continents or if it had a special price tag.As for the tracklist itself, it looks a lot like a blend between Hit Box 6 and Hit Box 7, from the same label, with a few exclusives not appearing on other FM Records compilations such as Hocus Pocus and I Have A Dream. I particulalry liked the version of "You're No Good" that's on this compilation, which is the Aswad Mix, a track I usually pass elsewhere. All in all it's a pretty solid 1995 Euro compilation, which resembles Hit Box in style (not looks, though!) and would have been quite decent back in its time. Fully deserves my 5. My only "complaint" with it is that, if you were able (and interested) in buying this compilation in its day, you probably already had Hit Box 6 and 7, over which this compilation adds very little value. But that was a problem in general with FM Records' "side" compilations. Hit Box and Groovy Sound had little overlap, but anything else was mostly rehashes.
