One rhetorical question: How come she didn't become a superstar with this album (for a moment, let's pretend musical talent alone is enough for that)? I'm (shell) shocked not only that it doesn't have even one review but from the 3.9 average rating as well. Here's why I think it's grossly underappreciated: -It doesn't mimic the eighties (like 90% of Synthwave and Synthpop does), this IS the eighties. She speaks in its language and owns it! -So fresh, rhythms breathe full of soul, life and energy... 'Believe It' and 'Rough N' Soothe' alone should prove it (which are my personal favourites). -She makes a generic word like 'flashlight' sound so sexy and emotional. -All k.i.l.l.e.r., no filler (except for Earthrise). Having given it a relisten after about two years, I'm still blown away by how sounds should be where they are... it doesn't follow a template or merely fills space. Purposeful sound design is the key term. -It's as if you put together mosaic pieces from Samantha Fox, Madonna, Vanity 6, Cyndi Lauper and even Pat Benatar and made them into an LP, only better. Add to that the fact unlike said singers, she actually produced and mixed it herself?! How is it not a recipe for appreciation that spreads like wildfire? Whatever hers were, I've yet to hear anyone utilise their influences so effortlessly. -If you grew up listening to eighties music, you'd recognise the authenticity... that precipitated, hazy, dusty and smoky pastel-coloured look, sound and feel akin to early multicolour technology on Kodak polaroids, atmosphere glistening from heat that became stereotypical of the decade... IMO much more veritably than the aforementioned genres. And you'd know these are songs that would've instantly jumped into tops of charts had they came out back then. For example 'What's In Your Bag' and 'In The City' would've been the hymns of teenage girls, as much as Girls Just Want To Have Fun was, '1000 Nights' surely included as a soundtrack in a plethora of movies but I can picture at least half of the album inserted into most, random Miami Vice clubbing and/or panorama-introductory scenes. And so on and so forth. -What you hear is what you get: I've read somewhere that she used era-specific instrumentation and equipment. Oberheim, Jupiter, Juno, tape machines, DDD-1... (obviously can be heard, too) you name it. NO plugins whatsoever (thank goodness) unless really necessary. For that alone it deserves a praise. -Never liked the phrase 'leaves something in the dust' but talent-wise.. all this is exactly where she does your so called pop divas of yesterday (thinking about Gaga, Rihanna, Swift and the likes...)-It reeks of cool attitude. Etc, etc. I for one instantly fell in love with it in 2014 and that admiration is here to stay.
