The first 21 seconds of choices is probably the most beautiful thing I've heard in drum and bass. I actually wish that synth was used more throughout the tune, but the way the dark riff used after the drop fades in is just fantastic. The rest of this tune is your standard teebee fair, which really holds up with those beats until you're plunged into the atmosphere of the breakdown. 'Aura' could not be a more appropriate name, this tune just takes you away and makes you feel like you're in some sought of evil foggy maze (well it is called choices, hurhur) Teebee always delivers and this tune proves it. Hats off to him!The flip from Quadrant is definitely the darker tune, and while i personally favour the a side, i've seen that quite a few people prefer this. It begins with a very dark, almost gothic sounding riff as the beats roll in, and when it drops we're treated to an equally dark bassline with a haunting female vocal sample and plenty of variation to carry the tune. Its very well produced, as you'd expect, because Quadrant has recently had a release on metalheadz which dosen't surprise me at all! With the two carpe diem ep's featuring classics such as between the lines by vc, subdue by noisia, ignition by spor and overtime by friction & k-tee (all of which were featured on the history of hardware cd) its no doubt that this sampler may have been overlooked by some, but i strongly recommend that you pick it up or at least have a listen - because for me it just affirms (even more so) hardware's greatness and that whatever you may think of their sound today, they released some untold classics, even after the obvious glory days of quantum mechanics, messiah, invisible man ep etc etc...
