When I first found this set I was expecting it to be a good collection of weird, crazy noises that we would associate with avant garde music. I've listened to it a few times, at least, and have no negative feelings about it.It's interesting that these recordings were originally on 10-inch records that would go along with certain issues of Source magazine. Such magazines would go for a few hundred dollars these days! [I've included a few links below where you could check 'em out on Discogs]. You wouldn't have to pay soooo much on this 3-CD set. Just be aware that this is NOT music for relaxation (for instance, the first track, "The Wolfman" by Robert Ashley, starts off quietly and then gradually gets LOUD!). I wonder if there's a book or something containing all the issues of Source magazine. Well, there is "Source: Music of the Avant-garde, 1966-1973". I haven't gotten that book, but I might.Issue #4Issue #7 and 8Issue #9Another interesting thing on this set is Lowell Cross's "Video". Since I have Magix Entertainment Audio Cleaning Lab 16, I managed to put on the Phase Correlation and could make out certain patterns, especially on the (L) part. Maybe not the best way to view the piece, but it seems to work. I even find it kinda enjoyable when I just listen to that track.The recording of Alvin Lucier's "I Am Sitting in a Room" on this set is not to be confused with the one released by Lovely Music. The Source version is an earlier and shorter recording. The other was recorded in the late '70s and is longer. Both were done by Lucier himself and have differences (i.e., different parts where he stuttered).I'll mention a few related albumsLucier was also featured in Imaginary Landscapes (track 8). Besides Lucier, there's Robert Ashley and David Behrman, who were also featured in Ohm: The Early Gurus of Electronic Music.
