For me, this 12 is all about the production. Even in today's digital age you will be extremely hard pushed to find a release that comes anywhere close to the depth of this 83 electro classic. Even today, this is the tune that I use to set up the sub in my car. This or The Angels Fell by Dillinja. A masterpiece. That's it.

For all the undeniable attention that 'Rockit' got for its wider influence on popular music and music videos, music lovers would equally have been glad of the inclusion of the tracks on the B side. Two of Herbie's Disco masterpieces included with a future Electro classic. What more could you want?

This was my first-ever 12" (bought upon release in 1983). Was initially disappointed it wasn't more than the regular LP version. I did not immediately appreciate the well-spaced grooves which allow that fantastic beat and expert turntablism to breathe at full strength (through a system which is up to it). Have always wondered if the 45RPM pressings are even better in this regard. One of many musical purchases of the times which the folks were at a complete & utter loss to comprehend. And if that's not a tribute to Herbie's pioneering creative spirit, what is? Sounds as cool today as it always has.

Correct title: A. Herbie Hancock Meets Coldcut - RockitB. Herbie Hancock featuring Mixmaster Mike, DXT, Rob Swift, Qbert, Babu, Faust & Shortee - Rockit 2.002 (full length version).A-side is a Coldcut' remix, very different from original. B-side starts from original (for about about one minute), then there's (too long, maybe 7 minutes) part of non-stop scratches, and then peace of original at the end. It is perfect for lovers of scratch performance, but not for general audience IMHO.

My version have something like Herbie Hancock signature on the front side of cover. Under "K" letter in "rock". Is It something usual, or my version is the special one?Sorry for my English...Peace!

This is a pivitol tune in the recent history of music. Herbie Hancock, more notable for his jazz sessions, found the new hip-hop sound coming out of the Bronx in the early 70's, as well as the intriguing new frontier of electronic music, as a new outlet for creativity. Much like when Dylan went electric, many of Herbie Hancocks fans betrayed him in this new venture. Still, to this day, there is a rift between those whole like Herbie Hancock jazz and those who like Herbie Hancock electro. Regardless, this record is one of the more significant records to come out in this period marking a turning point in hip-hop music.

Classic funky hip hop tune made way back in 1983 by Herbie Hancock, the jazz keyboard master. Funkier than a dog licking his own bone, this starts on a scratch you just can't bitch and keeps dropping bombs all the way through. The production is excellent, really tight, breaks a-plenty, which build up and up until you have to freak out or burst. Think about it, this was made back in 1983 with only a handfull of 'modern' gizmos, yet you could play it today to a modern crowd, most of whom weren't even born then and it would still sound contemporary and fill the floor. Play it at a wedding and it'll probably cause a few people in their forties who should know better to try breakdancing all over again, so get your liability insurance sorted out first. But whatever, you can't knock this enormous tune.

I cannot describe how much I love both tracks on this single. Rockit is the template for all good electro tracks since and I Thought It Was You sounds so unbelievably like modern house music its untrue. Its hard to believe that these were made 20 years ago because they sound so fresh. If I had to choose the best, it would be ITIWY because you could play it in a set with new house tracks and it slip in very easily and inconspicuously. Masters at Work and Blaze seem to have based their entire careers on that track!
