One of the last recorded shows of Muddy Waters. It has also been filmed - in rather mediocre quality, compared with an event like that: The King Of Chicago Blues at the King of the Blues Festivals, the "Chicago Blues Festival". But well, america never was interested in the Blues... if this happended in Europe, the would have recorded it in multiangle 3D supercolor fancy pancy... Anyway, here is the music, direct from VHS-tape speaking of... It somehow works, as a historic concert recording. But, speaking about the playing, I have to admit that Muddy is in usual busy form, got a lot of soul in his voice and guitar solos. Main problem here is his early 80s tour band. As I remember - it is not mentioned on CD cover - they have about 3 guitar players in the band. One behind the other. And they exactly play like that. It is rather boring to listen (and watch, as I remember my video tape). Dullest band member by far - and none does understand, why Muddy took him into his band after Otis and Pinetop) is piano player Lovie Lee. Luckily his mix is far in the background, but whenever you hear him, you catch his beginner-blues-piano patterns. There is a perfect sounding bootleg live recording by the same band in summer/fall '81 in italy, where he is not buried in the mix... listen to that one, so you can figure out what I mean.Bright spot here is on Johnny Winter, who sings and plays very enthusiastically and powerful and the harp player (obviously George Buford) and - of course the man, Muddy Waters.
