The book is the only reason to get this. It's got nice pictures in it and looks pretty cool on the shelf. As it's targeted towards collectors, a lot of it is written in Japanese. Musically, it's a complete mess. The problem with retrospective compilations like this is that they never do what they're supposed to: pick the best bits from the label's back catalogue. See, there are many challenges facing a retrospective label compiler, lots of conflicting boxes to be ticked. You have to showcase the various different genres that the label has dabbled in over the years, even the ones it didn't do very well. You should include tracks from the its entire life span and make sure that a broad selection of artists is represented. And of course the biggest hits should be on there, too, even if everyone's sick and tired of them by now. And lest we forget - the mandatory exclusive new track to show that the label is still fresh and current (and make collectors feel even more compelled to buy the damn thing). Now, if the label's been going on for a while and there's a lot of music to choose from, and you only have the length of one CD at your disposal, you might have to compromise a little and edit some of the tracks to make sure they don't take up too much precious time that you need for the rest of the tracklist. "The Power Of The Underground" does all these things, in a "one-track-per-year" stylee, and as a result, it's a chequered and patchy affair which doesn't do the Djax label justice at all. About half of it is either bad hip hop (mostly in Dutch) or absolutely ghastly big beat/breaks tracks that only serve as a timely reminder that there was an awful lot of shit music in the 90's, too. As for the techno, classics like "Give Your Body", "Times Fade" and the inevitable "Circus Bells" are mercilessly faded out roughly midway through to make space for more tracks. That leaves us with Terrace, Ismistik and DJ Skull, and if you're the kinda guy who likes to have stuff on CD, two of those tracks are available on the "Round Up" album and the vastly superior "War of the Planets" compilation, respectively. Oh, and there's an accompanying 12" here as well, with a decent Claude Young track and some dull late 90's techno.So all in all, a botched execution, and a missed opportunity. But I like the book.
