“This is..” is effectively Afro Art’s greatest hits volume 2. Selected by label head honcho and jazz scene legend, Paul Murphy, you know he loves this stuff and we love this stuff too. The hugely successful Spiritual South remix of ‘Jazz Room’ by Messrs Murphy & Woolford and the underrated ‘UFO in Brazil’ by Austria’s Weisz is a brilliant start. And you’ve still got the equally brilliant ‘Green Gold’ (Spiritual South’s 2003 Peterson Worldwide single of the year) and Murphy’s own classic, ‘Soul Call’ to come. Frogsnatcher’s ‘Dream Rabbit’ is dubby house from 2002 and still works. From the same year, ‘Skarada Dub’ by the Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra is a find where moogy twiddles meet Augustus Pablo on a Brazilian beat. No time to get comfy as it’s the 60’s, the Kinks have really got me and The Mindset is next up with ‘Get Set’ which is apparently a homage to Acid Jazz veteran Eddie Pillar. Neon Heights’ ‘Cannonball’ is funky-disco with acid jazz leanings that has been extrapercussively mixed and edited by Mr. Murphy. Extrapercussive sums it up and there’s more with Black Science Orchestra’s contribution and Canadians Ashen & Walker going samba nuts. I wasn’t so keen on Kenny Dope’s remix or the Big Chill favourite ‘Private Sunshine’ first time around. But since this CD came out I’ve found that not only are they beautifully done, the latter is also great hangover cure. Thanks to PM for that one, the whole CD and the label’s consistent excellent output. It just seems to be getting better. Scarily Greatest Hits Volume 3 will be even better still. In the meantime, lose yourself again in the Afro Art Jazz Room and turn it up.
