I picked up the 'Jungle Obsession E.P.' from a record store bargain bin for a quid way back in 1994 when I first got the hardcore/jungle vinyl collecting bug, and it's stayed a firm favourite ever since then. Sounding like a pure distillation of London pirate radio sounds from early '94, especially the jungle infused hardcore that was still being produced before the scenes began to split.Opening track 'The Vigilante' sets things of with ragga vocal samples, heavy, chopped up junglistic breaks and radio tuning sounds before hitting you with the self titled, 'vigilante' ragga vocal sample. It's followed up by the warm opening synth sounds of 'Love Of The Jungle' which then sets off a barrage of firing, roughneck amens and a sweet female vocal sample in the midsection ('Mix me down operator mix me down. Mix me down till me really touch the ground'). A nice little moody section kicks in immediately afterwards to change the pace of the track creating a nice mix of light and dark. The flipside offers similar fare with loads of chopped up, jungle amens featuring in both 'Jewel Of The Jungle' and 'Maximum Ruff', which are both okay tracks, but not a patch on A1 & A2. Awesome collection of raw hardcore/jungle.
