Mr.Bean
Charlatan, genius? Is he just playing with our perceptions? Does he know who he is or who he wants to be. Daniel Romano keeps us guessing, he's toying with us and has been from the start, or at least that's the feeling I get. I've been following his work since falling across his 'Alt Country' output on Youtube, while resident in the UK it's been hard to get hold of his music in this country.I was surprised to see this LP for sale at a record store in the slightly more generally artistically illuminated city of Brighton, on the South Coast of England, where I shop, for records, occasionally. You will spot influences on this recording, it sounds to my ears that he's wholesale lifted the Incredible Stringband's arrangements and delivery, the vocal nuance of 'Got any Mandies . . Bob' Dylan. There is Nick Drake like guitar fingerings, knowingly, self conscious attempts to quirk up the arrangements, knowingly self obviousl attempts to leave us guessing, and for that, it's wonderfully and utterly fresh, wonderfully and utterly clean, and mouth pleasing, it'll make you smile. It made me jump around the living room in Bourbon infused joy.I was disappointed with the only other album I've been able to get hold of here in the UK, 'Come Cry With Me' which I thought was a let down on the potential of live and gonzo performances viewed online, but this is a 5 star Lp. Love it. If you like music that you haven't heard before, and I mean haven't heard before on anyone else's Lp, then get this. You'll be tempted to think, pretentious git, all that 'recording on the land of the..' it is pretentious, but I think, and maybe I'm wrong, that he's only enjoying dicking us about.
