BORZOTA
Linda Clifford was an excellent Southern soul shouter of the first order, but this Lp came during the height of the Disco era. Therefore, it has a split personality: Disc 1 alternates between high-BPM dance tunes and down-home Soul cuts. Now, I'm no Disco hater, but the Soul tracks here are so much better, so head-and-shoulders above the Disco tracks, that there's really no comparison. (For an excellent example of her work in a soulful vein, see her debut Lp, Linda Clifford - Linda.) But even the Disco cuts on Disc 1 aren't bad, redeemed by the Soul cuts interspersed. What really sinks the album, though, is the presence of Disc 2, which is just a 12" single, with extended Disco mixes of a single song on each side. And what songs they are: a hopped up version of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" that makes any sane man rap his forehead and ask "why?", and, worst of all, a reworking of the hoary old Broadway popper "One Of Those Songs", a cut you instantly regret hearing. So if you must have this, stick to the Lp and never touch the 12", and you'll be OK.
