The mighty purple album! The pinnacle of the career of one of Sweden's best known synthpop bands. Although they have steadily morphed into a regular popband this was back in 1991, and they composed music heavily influenced by Depeche Mode. Soundwise it comes rather close to the Black Celebration era, but dismissing this as a simple clone product would mean doing it grave injustice. It starts with the massive hit (well in certain circles at least...) "Afraid" which to this day continues to give me goose bumps each time I hear it. Like most of the songs on this album it is dark and energetic, supported by excellent vocals and a very catchy refrain. There are also some more mellow tracks of which one is an excellent take on a love ballad. The lyrics are suitably depressing, and really shine in places like "There's a new way of life, it's brutalized, it shows in the way you beat your wife, and raise a child to grow up and be afraid". In my opinion this continues to be one of the absolute essentials of the local scene, matched in quality only by the follow up album "Test". If you can find it, give it a listen, you both deserve it.
