Purestone
Ada returns for her second full-length, MEINE ZARTEN PFOTEN, kicking it off with another cover, this time of Luscious Jackson's "Faith." Ada turns it into a nearly ambient piece that retains the melancholy of the original, which then fits in nicely with the calm, floating "On the Mend." The big rhythms and techno flourishes of her releases on Areal don't make an appearance until "At the Gate" (you can hear the tension and excitement building in "Intro") so in the meantime, we're treated to the bucolic "Likely" with its happy or sad looped vocals, or the blippy "The Jazz Singer." I like that the album has these two faces to it: the calm and pretty, and driving and heavy. It seems Ada can do it all. "Happy Birthday" merges these two sides together, taking a synth-line similar to her hit on Kompakt, "Lovestoned," and setting it into a chirping background. You can also hear DJ Koze's hand in that track, with the carefully altered voices. The happy or sad vocals make a reappearance on "2 Likely," which situates them firmly in the 'sad' camp, and the hidden track (a cover of Little Joy's "Keep Me in Mind") is spry and bouncy. Excellent in so many ways.
