Diplo, who helped M.I.A. craft her stunning debut, releases his own stunning debut, FLORIDA. ANd while you might think of Florida as full of retirees and Cuban exiles, Diplo shows that it's just as full with musical visionaries. The string section on "Big Lost" seems oddly out of place with the thick beats and the Wurlitzer, but, damn it, it works! The "try anything" aesthetic is on full display here, with "Sarah" going from moody with its piano line, then turning sunny once a brass section comes it. Martina Topley-Bird lends her vocals to the swirling "Into the Sun," a track built mainly on backspinning. "Way More" has these intriguing mini-horn builds and a recurring theme that circles around itself, then fades away completely, while "Money Power Respect" is all double bass... and bass until the samples of the two kids talking take it in a different direction. "Diplo Rhythm" takes the vocal percussion of baile funk and sets it against a blippy digital backdrop, while the longer "Work" seems like several disparate songs segued together. But "Summer's Gonna Hurt You" pulls things back, a slow and melancholy piece that grows psychedelic. An auspicious debut.
