The sleeve notes read "I wanted to be a brain surgeon but there was nothing i could do except hole up in the studio and," the sentence ending in mid-thought. Then another block of text reads: "This is the first in a series of twelve ambient works. Not music to listen to, but sound to listen by. Each piece is conceived for a specific function. Weird, yet strangely gratifying. One summer night in 1999 when this was released, I was DJing a party on some roof-top, in Brooklyn, NY, and also doing the "chill room" which consisted of a CD boombox downstairs near the kitchen. I put a chill CD in the downstairs radio, and would come back to change it every hour. At some point I put in "Healing" and when I came back to change it an hour later, there were some people who had gravitated toward the sound of the CD and instead of changing it, they just wanted to hear it again. I think "Healing" stayed in the CD player for the rest of the night and played through 3-4 times. In summary, it may not be music, but that doesn't mean you won't want to listen to it.
