In an era of much under-par, manufactured country music, the marketing executive turned Country muso, turns in a mammoth follow up album to the stellar Ry Cooder produced Angeleno.Outlaw's song writing has matured to an almost classic country troubadour level, much akin to early Eagles and Jackson Browne, whilst retaining an individual style that sets him way ahead of most of the competition. The vocal contributions of the sublime Molly Jensen, again bring balance and class to the songs.Opener "Everyones Looking For Home" tells of the rigours of life on the road whilst balancing the demands of family life, and the song really takes the listener by surprise, as it slowly builds to a marvellous crescendo , so reminiscent of Calexico's better moments , with trumpet and horns providing a backdrop."Bougainvillea, I Think" again weaves a wonderful story so suited to Outlaw's laid back vocals, in fact much of the albums understated beauty provides a sumptuous canvas for the songwriter to move from ballad (Bottomless Mimosas) to country irony (She's Playing Hard To Get (Rid Of)).Perhaps it is the albums title track, that is the greatest pointer to Sam's development as a songwriter and producer, showing just how to get a song almost perfect. Can't praise this album high enough - Just wonderful!
