What is there to say about such a salutary album as N.Y. Muscle ? DJ Hell, founder of Gigolo Records, return from nowhere in a moment of great criticism concerning the direction he oriented his label into. And what a comeback ! This album isn't only on hell of an ass-mover, it's also a powermix of dodgy melodies, punk elements and 80ies disco rush. A mixture that escapes, indeed, any concept of limitations or great taste, which inexorably leads to some kind of excess that just don't feel right, that just annoys the listener, but considering all the innovation, all the risks this adventure included, it would be a big mistake to judge this disc by it's bad moments. Songs like Keep On Waiting and Listen To The Hiss are sounding like a ton of brick, a pleasant torture to the eardrum that quickly makes it's way to the brain to cause an insane addiction. Alan Vega's vocals are absolutely horrid and creepy, which absolutely fits. Straight after, the most interesting song of the album, Tragic Picture Show, is as discopunk as it can get with James Murphy under the hood. Genius. Other highlights are Let No Man Jack et Je Regrette Everything, respectively an incursion in the hard acid universe and a kitsch jazzy song, which are both delicious... All in all, N.Y. Muscle isn't a perfect album and is far from being that. But it is certainly a great occasion to breathe. 4/5
