Mikas - The Spirit EP Reviewed: 8/10 The second release on Mikas’ Progressive Grooves digital imprint is another set of tracks by the label boss himself. ‘The Spirit EP’ comes with four different remixes of ‘Spirit Emotion’ and a solitary mix of ‘Connection Hybrid’ The original mix, like Mikas’ debut release, is a slice of pure progressive. Energising leads drift through the track, guided by a calming arpeggio and barely audible synths. Blissful and expansive, ‘Spirit Emotion’ is too mellow to consider as club fodder but it has enough quality to make it stand out. The Flying Break mix is built around a growling bassline. The heavily progressive sound of the original remains with soft, sweeping pads and acidy yet gentle synths cruising through the mix. The M>A>T> Project mix toughens things up with a straight 4/4 beat. Again, the effects are very progressive in nature but the heavier kick means that this will have a greater impact on a dancefloor. The Division 7 mix is not too dissimilar to the M>A>T> Project effort with the addition of a vocoded vocal sample. ‘Connection Hybrid’ is another very progressive track, using keys rather than pads to create the melody. The second release on Progressive Grooves is as strong as the first. The remixes cover the breaks and minimal side of progressive well while the original leads the charge with its crisp production and smooth atmospherics.
