Now we're talking! I don't know if it's that Catherine Wheel's sophomore album just sounds better off the bat than their debut did, but this is an improvement for the band in every respect (I bought both at the same time). The MOV release of Ferment didn't do much for me, but THIS record is amazing. The music on Chrome is not only harder edged, but also more catchy, and sound wise it's much more dynamic. Even though only about a year separates the two albums (hence why I always lump them together), they are drastically different. They really threw off the reins of shoegaze on this one, perhaps because grunge had become en vogue by the time their debut was released and already sounded dated at that point, and created a real banger of a rock album. This reissue really does it justice.

Abandoned Electrical
Sounds good to my ears, I didn't have any problems with the sound. For the most part I have enjoyed all of the MOV shoegaze reissues that I've purchased. The only problem with them is almost every time I receive them the inner sleeve is ripped on either side but I always take my records out to clean and stick in a new sleeve anyways, so no big deal really. The artwork on this copy is horrendous, super blurry up close and cheap. I also wish they would have included the insert that came with the original vinyl. Other than that, I'm pleased and very happy to now own this on vinyl.

It's not bad. Having heard this album a ton, on both CD and the OG vinyl copy, I'd say the bass it bumped up and overall it's sound compressed from the original pressing. The MOV Ferment represss sounds better overall I'd say.

EROROHALO
I've got both this and the original pressing, and I can't really hear much difference between the two to be honest. Maybe this one has 'slightly' more treble but in my opinion the difference is minimal. As for the artwork... well it's a totally different photo (albeit from the same session) for starters! On the original LP artwork the 3 dancers have clearly just entered the water, in the top half of the picture you can see the splash back and some air bubbles surround the 3 figures who are in a different position. MOV have used the artwork for the CD release here. Back cover is the same although there's more blue space and the figure is smaller. Inner leaflet thing is also lifted from the CD booklet and is different from the original which is an inner sleeve and features band photos as well as different text and other photos of the swimmers/dancers.Overall though I'm really happy with this, and I can play it instead of wearing out my original which was my main reason for buying.

Gosh, you're right! Just for comparison:- this is the Chrome CD version (from which this reissue's front cover was taken) - this is the Chrome original LP version (totally different dancers expressions and positions, plus the bubbles)

Just got my copy. I agree that MOV usually does a good job. That said, I could only get through a few songs of this. The sound was very thin and disappointing. Trying to remember if my CD of this album sounded the same, as if the original recording, mixing mastering process back in the day wasn't done well. My memory of this album was that it had a big bold sound. Will force myself to give the record a full listen but first blush was not impressed.

Can't wait until the US version ships. Any thoughts on this pressing? MOV usually puts out quality releases minus their covers.

Oh. What you meant were copies IMPORTED into the US, not a 'US Version', which means something else entirely.

I'm pleased with this one. It's a good pressing of a fantastic LP. Had one small pop at the end of Side one that took a cleaning or two to get out, but otherwise it's fantastic. Copy #270

I disagree on the artwork. I thinks it's a pretty poor reproduction job. Very hazy and the images are undefined. While I appreciate Music On Vinyl for reissuing so many killer albums, especially the shoegaze and grunge LP's from the early '90s, I agree with the OP that their artwork generally sucks.

Not sure what you mean by US Version, but mine arrived yesterday via Bull Moose and I'm pleased. It sounds great, and the jacket looks fantastic, too.

Received my copy today and I can say that I'm yet to be disappointed with the quality of the MOV reissues I have. BTW, the cover quality is excellent on this release. Do not hesitate!

Does anyone know if the vinyl issue will be both black and colored? I pre-ordered it on Amazon, but I want the limited silver version.

The first 1500 are colured, subsequent copies will be on black vinyl. Unless the Amazon listing states that its silver vinyl, you will mostprobably be sent black vinyl.

Anyone know why the vinyl version is so damned rare?No indication of it being a "Limited Edition" but presumably a very limited pressing nevertheless. But how many?

It was 1993. Were you buying LPs in 1993? Hardly anyone was. Most people were selling.

Like James' "Laid", Chrome was very likely a 16/44.1 recording and with it being crammed all onto a single LP there's really not a lot of reason for championing the vinyl when the original CD mastering is so good and pre-loudness wars. I would for sure consider a 2LP vinyl release if it were remastered by someone who does nice open dynamic masterings, James' Laid sounds very nice on the recent 2LP remaster. SIDE B of Chrome on a single LP is running almost 28 minutes! It's just science that the noise floor will be high.

I asked Dave Hawes, the bassist, if he had any idea how many copies were pressed on vinyl and he said, "I have no idea nor know who to ask."

I would guess that at the time vinyl was not very popular, thought to be a dead format, and Catherine Wheel never got as big as they should have outside the UK. Adam & Eve is even worse
