POP GOES TO THE MOVIESReleased on the Chevron label, this little oddity is a compilation of various instrumental and vocal interpretations of some of the 1970's most enduring film music, performed very sprightly by L.A. SOUNDS (an enthusiastic group of uncredited session musicians). The symphonic elements of the renditions of JAWS, STAR WARS and CLOSE ENCOUNTERS feature fairly dated arrangements for a small funky band. The more successful elements of this eclectic release are the vocal tracks, with NOBODY DOES IT BETTER and DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOU'RE GOING TO? being particular stand outs. It is unfortunate that no details are enclosed regarding the session singers, for they are at least worth naming.L.A. SOUNDS are pretty successful in mimicking as near to the original versions of the song renditions as possible. Time has not been kind to the this 70s novelty, but good songs like SEND IN THE CLOWNS and DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOU'RE GOING TO? never really age, regardless of arrangements. My minor quibble is the scant insert information regarding the tracks and I had to google some of the titles, to see what films they appeared in. In summation, I think this little release is a joy. The 1970s are alive and well with POP GOES TO THE MOVIES!
